Notes

Anne, daughter of James and Mary Templer of Stover House, Devon, married 9 January 1779 (the year of the present portrait), Sir John William de la Pole, 6th Bart. of Shute (d.1799). Together they had two sons and one daughter, William (1782-1847), who succeeded his father as 7th Baronet, Mary (b.1784) and John (b.1797). The present lot was painted in order to be sent to the sitter's brother George Templer who was in India at the time.

A full-length portrait of Anne, Lady de la Pole by George Romney, painted circa 1786, is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA, (Acc.no.61.392). For a portrait of her daughter-in-law, see lot 161.
