Description

The Apple Thief signed with initials conjoined and inscribed 'FJohnson/Ecouen' (lower left) oil on canvas 16 x 13 in. (40.6 x 33 cm.) NOTES A native of New York, Samuel Frost Johnson spent years studying and exhibiting abroad, beginning in Dsseldorf and relocating to Antwerp and Paris beginning in 1859. The artist did return to the United States in the 1870s to become professor of Art and Science at Fordham University and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Works by Samuel Frost Johnson have been exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1869, the National Academy of Design of New York in 1870, 1877-81 and the Brooklyn Academy of Art throughout the 1870s.
