A Member of the diplomatic service, seated before a fireplace and overmantle mirror, a quill and ink pot on a table to his left, holding papers and wearing blue uniform with silver epaulettes, scarlet and silver standing collar and cuffs, scarlet and gold cummerbund, the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George on a wide blue and red ribbon suspended from his neck and a breast star.
Signed on the obverse S Lover, ebonised wood frame.

Notes


Foskett records the sitter as possibly being a Lord Lieutenant. In their December 1980 catalogue, Sotheby's observed that he could be an Ambassador.
