Valentiner, who was the first to recognize Hoogstraten's authorship of this drawing, dated it circa 1646, whereas Sumowski dates it circa 1649.
This was once on a mount bearing an inscription thought to be in the hand of Wilhelm Bode, and recording his opinion that the drawing had been corrected by Rembrandt: Der eine schlafende Nachter vielleicht eigenhandige Correktur Rembrandts.
