Item Overview

Description

Sandra Rubel (American 1945-2015). Modern impressionist still life oil painting on canvas. Unframed. Measures 18"x14"x1". Weight 2 pds. Sandra Rubel was born in San Diego, CA, and as the daughter of a US Navy Admiral, spent much of her youth traveling and living around the world. She enjoyed a multilingual education that included art lessons in places as diverse as Lima, Peru and Cannes, France. She later continued her art studies at the Corcoran Museum School in Washington, DC, Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she earned a BFA degree. A prolific artist, Sandra Rubel has generated a large body of work in pastel, watercolor and oil. These paintings have been exhibited around the world, as well as the national juried exhibitions of the Pastel Society of America, the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, the Salmagundi Art Club (where she was a member), the Pen and Brush Club, and in student and museum exhibitions at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League. In addition, Sandra has also lectured and/or demonstrated at the Pen and Brush Club, American Craft Museum, Philadelphia College of Fine Art, Mingei Museum, Denver Art Museum, Golden Door Resort, and Rancho La Puerta (Tecate, Mexico). September 11th, 2001 devastated Sandra’s life and studio. For over 24 years, she had lived and worked 100 feet from the World Trade Center, and its collapse resulted in 18 windows being blown out in her Cedar Street studio; the loft was subsequently inundated by 6 feet of rubble. Yet this tragedy provided a backdrop for some of Sandra’s most important work of all, the 9/11 Series which arose out of her life in and around Ground Zero, entitled “Absolute Zero”. It features the only onsite painting of Ground Zero in the world, viewed from what had been her bedroom window. She returned to the loft in 2003, after nearly two years of cleanup and a series of moves throughout the city. She resumed painting but suffered a string of health setbacks and financial blows stemming from 9/11 for the next 10 years. She continued planning out new paintings up until her death in late 2015.PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate.
