With wood box inscribed Satake Eikai hitsu tango kyokujitsu sho no zu (Painted by Sakake Eikai for the Bright Day of the Boys' Day Festival) with an authentication by Masatake Kanrei, November 1929

Satake Eikai was born in northern Japan to a family of lacquer artists. His artistic accomplishments as a painter brought him professional success by the age of 14 and he studied under the Literati painting master Tani Buncho (1763-1840). He was later appointed court painter to Ii Naosuke (1815-1860), Daimyo of Hikone.
