Item Overview

Description

Schorn, Carl
1803 Düsseldorf - 1850 Munich

Card Game in the Tavern.
Capuchin Monks and Knights at the Table. Signed lower right: C. Schorn. Oil on canvas. 63 x 77cm. Framed.

Provenance:
Private collection, Berlin.

Literature:
Boetticher, Friedrich von: Paintings from the 19th Century, Vol. II.,2, p.641 et seq.

A similar artwork by the young Schorn, depicting monks and knights in Wallenstein attire playing cards, can be found at the National Gallery Berlin. Boettichter has listed this piece, mentioned above, as number 8 dated 1837. A few years later Schorn addressed the same issue, and created various pieces with slight adjustments. This version was part of the Berlin collection of Hofagent Anker. The piece displayed here, presumably in its original frame, could have been listed as painting number 18, which was delivered from the Berlin collection.
