Item Overview

Description

SCHWEITZER, Albert (1875-1965). Typed letter signed ("Albert Schweitzer") to The Beacon Press, 24 October 1957. 2 pages, 4to, with 10-line autograph postscript. Matted and framed. "I AM NOT ALWAYS COMFORTABLE WITH THE COMPLICATED STATEMENTS GENERATED BY MODERN MACHINES" Schweitzer asks his publisher's help in settling his accounts after the recent death of his wife, as he prepares to return to West Africa. "For the settlement of my wife's estate after her death in June 1957, after many years of happy life together, I am making an inventory of our possessions." He wants to declare their income as of 30 June and he asks his publisher to send him his next royalty statement and payment as of June 30, even though he is owed additional royalties. Those he would like to receive either at the end of 1957 or early in 1958. He asks that statements be forwarded to him "after my departure from Gunsbach to Africa. "Would you please give me at the end of your accounting a statement making it clear exactly what is the amount I have received from you. I am not always comfortable with the complicated statements generated by modern machines. So please give me an explanation for the layman to understand." He gives directions for his bank account at the Banque de l'Afrique Occidentale, in Gabon, French Equatorial Africa, and asks them to forward payments owed him there (he provides his bank account number) or to the Bank's main offices in Paris. "If that is troublesome, then please send the check and royalty statement to Gunsbach."
