Item Overview

Description

Drawing, pen and brown ink, grey and yellow wash, 20 x 17,2 cm, laid paper with watermark (circle with crown), signed at statue base "W. Pompe f." (several brown stains). - Walter Pompe (1703-1777) was a Flemish master-sculptor, known for his religious works in wood. He was a student of Michiel Van de Voort, from Antwerp. Often he designed Baroque interiors for important churches such as the high altar of St Peter's church in Turnhout and the statues of the City Hall of Middelburg. Our drawing is very similar to a group of sculpture drawings now in the collection of the Museum of Art and History in Brussels (inv. 8852). The sheet contains a ms. note in the same brown ink, describing the height and costs of the intended statue "Mot koste 55 gulde wisselgelt / 3 voeten hogh". - Ref. - Joined, 4 anonymous drawings: 1. St Francis receiving the Stigmata. Flemish, 18th c. Black chalk, 24 x 19,5 cm, blue prepared paper, unsigned (laid down on backing paper, several yellow stains).-- 2. The Last Supper in a cartouche. Flemish school, 18th c. Pen and brown ink, grey and red wash, 21 x 14,2 cm, laid paper, unsigned (sm. tear at right edge, sl. smudged).-- 3. Blessing Christ in a cartouche. Flemish school, 18th c. Pen and brown ink, 6,7 x 4,2 cm, laid paper, unsigned (laid down, smudged). Probably by same artist as previous drawing.-- 4. Egmond castle along the Meuse river.
