Bombelli fu un ritrattista celebre al tempo suo. Si ispirň a fonti bolognesi, toscane e, probabilmente, allo stesso Velazquez di cui ammirň i ritratti imperiali a Vienna (Kunsthistorischen Museum). Allievo del Guercino č suggestionato dello Strozzi, fu a sua volta l’iniziatore della nuova ritrattistica veneta da Frà Galgario alla Rosalba Carriera. Un gran numero dei suoi ritratti si trova nella Fondazione scientifica Querini Stampalia a Venezia. / In his day Bombelli was a celebrated portraitist. He drew his inspirations from Bolognese and Tuscan sources, as well as from Velazquez, whose portraits he studied in the Imperial Collections in Vienna (today's Kunsthistorisches Museum). He was a student of Guercino and probably also of Strozzi and revived Venetian portraiture between Frà Galgario and Rosalba Carriera. Many of his works are preserved in the Fondazione scientifica Querini Stampalia in Venice.
