Notes

We are grateful to Professor Giancarlo Sestieri for proposing the attribution on the basis of photographs, noting strong analogies with the Madonna in Glory with Saints in the church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Fano (cf. B. Cleri, Sebastiano Ceccarini, Fano, 1992, pp. 76-8, no. 13, illustrated). Born in Fano, like other illustrious Marchigian artists, not least of all Carlo Maratti, Sebastiano Ceccarini went to Rome around 1724 to be trained in the workshop of his successful compatriot Francesco Mancini, with whom he later collaborated and whose academic approach he surpassed to achieve a more delicate and truthful naturalism. He became head of the Accademia di San Luca in 1750.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
