Notes

France Slana is recognized as one of Europe's most influential watercolorists. In the words of Janesz Mesesnel: "The artist uses his imagination to reshape reality into a universe of fluid line and vibrant color. He freely interprets forms but never strays into total abstraction; this results in an inner structure to his compositions which is attractive, interesting, and even puzzling. The artist returns again and again to the same theme, each time with new energy and from a new perspective. His fondness for remnants of the past is evident in the decaying boats, fossilized fish, abandoned mills, empty barns, and broken-down horses which have reappeared in his compositions over the years. Also obvious is his genuine appreciation for the beauty of nature; he tirelessly reexamines the delicate shapes and colors of a bouquet of flowers, or the moods and nuances of a landscape." http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/24975963?selectedversion=NBD1995960
