SEO (b. 1977)
The South Korean artist SEO, whose real name is Seo Soo-kyoung, was born in 1977 in Seoul. From 1992 to 1996 she attended the Gwangju Art School and then studied at the Cho-sun University in Gwangju until 2000. At the end of her studies, she was awarded best student of the year and in the same year she left South Korea to study at the Berlin University of Arts in the class of Georg Baselitz. She was his protégée until 2004. Her works were initially characterized by a linear style of painting, but eventually the linear element lost its importance and color became the main focus. Most of her oeuvre consist of work groups, which are built around a central theme. Her work has been presented in numerous single and group exhibitions, such as 2004 in New York, Erfurt and Regensburg, 2007 in Mannheim, Madrid and Seoul, 2011 in Beijing and Berlin, and in 2014 in Stockholm and Koblenz and 2015 in Venice.
