Notes

Serge Fiorio (1911 in Vallorbe, Switzerland, of Piedmontese parents - 2011 in Viens, Vaucluse) is a French - Italian painter of Piedmontese origin. His father was Jean Giono's cousin. He had settled after the Second World War in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, in Montjustin where he lived and painted from 1947 to 2011. Born in Switzerland, of Piedmontese parents, Serge Fiorio follows his family who often move, depending on the movements of the father's company (masonry, public works) to the place of his successive sites - mainly the boring of tunnels. In 1924, it was set up for sixteen years in Taninges, a small village in Haute-Savoie, where the Fiorio company operated an open-air quarry for loading roads and various masonry works. Very early - at fourteen - Serge worked there, living with the workers. At the same time, he draws them, then soon paints them. After meeting masks in the open countryside, the Carnival celebrations also inspire him - and will continue to do so, becoming one of his favorite themes, throughout his work. Giono, his father's cousin, is immediately interested in his first attempts at implementation, then asks him to paint his portrait. After this work, the young self-taught artist gains confidence. Curious about what Giono told him about it during one of his vacation stays with the Fiorios in Taninges in 1931, the painter Constant Rey-Millet went to the barracks on the site where Serge worked to see firsthand what what the young painter does. A friendship was born during which Rey-Millet, twice, sketched Serge's portrait in pencil / In 1936, in order to paint more, he left the life of quarryman to settle down as a photographer; until his mobilization, in 1939, in Bourgoin, in Isère, during which he expressed himself in wash and gouache / 1938: Thanks to his Portrait of Jean Giono, it is the meeting of Eugène Martel, the painter of Revest-du-Bion. They exchange until the death of Martel in 1947, an important correspondence / 1939: mobilization in genius, where he meets the Arlesian Paul Geniet - a simple soldier like him - who, with his wife Yvonne, will become his favorite letter-writing confidants over about ten years / 1940: friendship with the writer Luc Dietrich, who will make him meet the poet Lanza del Vasto. With his brother Aldo, they settle in Campsas in Tarn-et-Garonne where they operate a farm, while lending a hand to the Resistance installed in the region. There he painted a modern Pietà, his large canvas entitled La Mort du comarade. The war ended, and after several setbacks, he dreams of Haute-Provence; opens up about it to Giono who directs it, as if by chance, to his discoverer and friend Lucien Jacques, watercolorist recently installed in Montjustin, halfway between Apt and Manosque. Serge Fiorio will never stop wanting to settle there forever. This is what the entire Fiorio tribe did in 1947, when they came to live in the old, dilapidated presbytery, perched at the top of the village. Serge Fiorio painted there more and more, never ceasing to do so, which allows the Fiorios to buy, then in ruins, houses to restore, land to cultivate, and also to raise a herd of goats and sheep / From 1948, the Fiorios joined the Peace Movement, chaired by their friend Yves Farge. Friendship with a couple of young poets: Lucienne Desnoues and Jean Mogin, the son of Norge, as well as with the collector André Bernard and his wife the singer Josy Andrieu who will share with him the friendship of Joan Baez by driving several times the American artist in Montjustin, in his studio / In 1979, it was the beginning of an “ecological” correspondence with Adrienne Cazeilles, a teacher from the Aspre valley heard on the radio in her Radioscopie par Jacques Chancel. He was elected mayor by the town council of his village in 1983. Five years later, during the presidential elections of 1988, he sponsored the candidacy of Arlette Laguillier.
