The boat depicted in the present work is called a barquentine or barque. The rigged vessel is shown prominently flying the Red Ensign of the Merchant Navy.

The background of the painting is believed to depict the River Lee in County Cork. The artist painted a similar view of the channel of the River Lee, further down the estuary: View of Passage West on the River Lee, Co. Cork, with Monkstown Castle in the distance, a mail boat ariving in the foreground, dated 1849 (sold Christie's London, 12 May 2006, lot 25).
