Description

SINETY, André Louis de Voyage de S.A.R. Monseigneur le duc de Montpensier à Tunis, en Egypte, en Turquie et en Grèce. Paris A. Bertrand [1847] Plano: front. and 32 plates (some minor marg. dampstaining, some minor foxing). Contemp. half blue shagreen (rubbed, faded), gilt titled spine on 6 raised bands (rubbed), blue cloth on covers (stained and def. on lower cover). Rare first edition of this nice picturesque atlas containing a tinted lithographed pictorial title and 31 tinted plates lithographed by Bayot, Dauzats, Guiaud, Mayer and Sabatier after de Sinety. The plates show some official events, but mainly fine views of mosques, Egyptian temples, churches, landscapes etc. They depict views in Tunis, Carthage, Cairo, Suez, Siout, Assouan, Philae, Luxor, Damietta, Constantinople, Broussa, Cap Sunium, Corinth, Eurotas, Sparta, Mistra, Taygetus, Mount Ithome, Messena, Cryssa and Delphi. First Lieutenant Sinety was Deputy Commander of the vessel Le Gomer that took in 1845 Antoine Montpensier (1824-1890, Earl of Orléans) and his secretary and friend Antoine de Latour, through the Levant along the coasts of the Mediterranean to Tunis, Egypt, Turkey and Greece. Montpensier's visit to the East was mainly of a political nature. This book of plates is a rarity nowadays on the book market. The text volume written by A. de Latour is not present here. Ref. Atabey 1138. - Blackmer 952. Prov. "de Trazegnies" (handwritten ownership entry on first endpaper).
