SIR CHARLES HOLROYD, RE, HRMS (1861-1917) "Right hand of one female figure which chipped paint showing the white ground extending to an area of only a few millimetres. The support with on the reverse two vertical batons but no evidence of warping or splitting; also two fragmentary paper exhibition labels, Berlin 1907 and Liverpool 1908 THE JUDGMENT OF PARIS signed, panel, 39 x 59cm" Sir Charles Holroyd was born in Leeds. He was taught by Alphonse Legros whilst studying at the Slade School and later becoming his assistant. As a young painter he worked at Newlyn from which his first picture to be shown at the Royal Academy was exhibited in 1885. He was a particularly accomplished etcher and occupied the influential positions of, successively, Director of The Tate Gallery and the National Gallery from 1897 to 1917.
