Sir Hubert von Herkomer, RA" (1849-1914) "HEAD OF AN OLD MAN" signed with initials and date 95 in the plate "herkomertype (monotype), published c.1895" 23 x 18cms; 9 x 7in. (plate size). NB Herkomer was a pioneer developing the technical aspects of print making and devised the above method of producing multiple impressions of "monotype images. The process, essentially photo mechanical, has been termed herkomertype and involved fixing the original monotype image permanently by heliogravure onto a copper plate so that a small edition could be printed.
