Sir Richard C. Hoare (2nd Baronet) (1758-1838) 'A North West View of Brecknock in South Wales, Church of St. Mary, 1st June 1793', 'East View of The Cathedral & C of St. David's in Pembrokeshire, 17th June, 1793', 'View of King John's Hall Taken From the Inside Court of the Episcopal Palace at St David's, 17th June, 1793', 'Cathedral Church & C At St David's', all inscribed and two signed, pen, ink and sepia watercolour, unframed, each 36cm x 53cm (including outer margins), image sizes 29.5cm x 47cm (a set of four) Hoare was descended from 'Sir Richard Hoare, Lord Mayor of London, the Founder of the Banking Business, C. Hoare and Co. he was educated at a preparatory school in Wandsworth, a seminary school at Greenford and was taught classics by Reverend Joseph Eyre, he inherited the large Stourhead Estate from his grandfather Henry Hoare, which enabled him to pursue his interests which included archaeology, he succeeded to the Baronetcy in 1787, and married Hester, Daughter of William Lyttelton, 1st Baron Lyttelton in 1784, and toured France, Italy and Switzerland and made another continental tour in Italy and Sicily in 1788, 'Recollections Abroad', and 'A Classical Tour Through Italy and Sicily', he made numerous sketches whilst on these tours, which were bound into volumes, many of these were dispersed in the Stourhead Sales in the 1880's. His tutor was John Warwick Smith. He also commissioned Francis Nicholson to paint coloured reduced versions from his sepia sketches, a journey through Wales Followed, and a book published in 1804, he also toured Ireland. Hoare was elected a 'Fellow of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of London', he was also high sheriff of Wiltshire in 1805, he died at Stourhead in 1838, his mausoleum is at St. Peter's Church Stourton, Wiltshire, a marble monument can be found in Salisbury Cathedral.
