Ian Tregarthen Jenkin (1920-2004)

Ian Tregarthen Jenkin had a highly successful and innovative career in art education during the course of which he met many of the major figures of twentieth century British art.

Ian went to Stowe School on an art scholarship, and then briefly to Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, before studying economics at Trinity College, Cambridge. After the war, he joined the staff of the Slade School of Fine Art, becoming a close friend of Sir William Coldstream. In 1975 Ian moved to Camberwell as principal. On his retirement in 1985 he became curator of the Royal Academy Schools but left after a year when he was invited to help set up the Open College of Arts by Michael Young (Lord Young of Darlington). He served as director, then president. The Open College has taught art through correspondence courses to over fifty thousand students across the world.

Throughout his career Ian was passionate about broadening access to the visual arts, and helping his students. He served with numerous organisations including the Arts Council, the Craft Council and was governor for art colleges across the country. He also worked hard to bring art into hospitals and prisons.

Ian was regarded as a charming man, with a wide circle of friends. Over the years he acquired a fine collection of paintings from students, friends and colleagues including works by Sir William Coldstream, Anthony Gross and John Aldridge.
