Ms Ester Raine, wearing white dress, a double gold medallion belt clasp at her waist, her black cloak draped over her shoulders and edged with grey fur, her auburn hair curled and upswept, white turban.
Signed on the reverse and dated Ms Ester Raine-/ W. J. Newton -/ Pinxit/ Miniature Painter in ordinary/ to their magisties -/ 6 Argle Street -/ 1832/ NB. copied from a picture painted/ by the late Mr Hoppner with/ a few alterations -; together with two portrait miniatures of Dr Raine and Reverend Barker by the same hand: the former, seated in a red upholstered chair and wearing dark grey coat and oval spectacles; the latter, wearing black robes, white bands and powdered physical wig. The former, signed on the reverse and dated The Late Dr. Raine./ W. J. Newton/ Pinxit/ Miniature Painter in/ ordinary to their magisties/ 6 Argyle Street/ 1832./ NB. a posthumous work; the latter, signed on the reverse and dated R. Barber/ W. J. Newton/ Pinxit/ Miniature Painter in/ ordinary to their magisties/ 6 Argyle Street/ 1832. NB. a posthumous portrait/ R Barber Sent born 4th Jan 1745 5/6./ died 31st Dec 1819.-/ RB.; all three miniatures gilt-mounted within glazed wooden box frames with velvet linings.
