Solon Hannibal was the younger brother of Gutzon Borglum and grew up in Nebraska. He studied at art school in Cincinnati where he was regularly found at the local government stable, measuring and sketching horses. One of his first pieces of sculpture, entitled Horse Pawing a Dead Horse on the Prairie won a prize in the school exhibition. It may relate to the present work, which also appears to be one executed in his youth.
