Lot 103: Souza Pinto, Jose Julio de (1856-1939)

Souza Pinto, Jose Julio de (1856-1939) Graphite on paper. Signed and dated from 1917. Damp patches and creases. Born in the Azores "Ilha Terceira", it was in Oporto that Souza Pinto started his art studies at the "Oporto Fine Arts School" from 1870 until 1878. In 1880, with Henrique Pousao, Souza Pinto went to Paris to join the study of Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889), and under the guidance of William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905), the "Ecole des Beaux-Arts". In 1890 he became member of the oficial jury of "Legion d'Honneur" and in 1900 academic jury of the "Ecole des Beaux-Arts". Souza Pinto was the first Portuguese painter to be represented at the "Muse du Luxembourg" (later "Muse d'Orsay"). He lived in Brittany until 1939.
