Description

SPANISH FESTIVALS
Exposicion General Epañola: Two Posters.Artists: Francisco Hohenleiter de Castro & Rafael de Penagos Zalabardo (1889-1954)
These two posters were created in order to generate interest for this countrywide celebration of all things Spanish. Seeing as the exposition was anchored by Barcelona in the east and Seville on the western front, Penagos (b) was an ideal designer choice as a lifelong resident of Madrid, he was situated as an artistic fulcrum in the central capital. Rooted solidly to the unseen earth like a pagan high priestess of culture, his entire design practically drips with rich tones of gold and crimson, a powerful image that encompasses every aspect of national pride one could wish for from the athletic to the scholarly to the purely beautiful. Thematically speaking, Hohenleiter (a) goes a little lighter on the allegory in his promotion, placing a pair of senoritas and transoceanic commerce set between classic columns to lure the viewer though in all fairness, he does use a powerfully-jawed nationalistic lion and a bit of Latin to entice them to explore what's 'on the other side' of the now-snapped entrance chain. This is the smaller format of both posters.
