Description

Stanley (Sir Henry Morton, 1841-1904). The Congo and The Founding of Its Free State: A Story of Work and Exploration, 2 vols., 1st ed., 1885, portrait frontis. to each, eng. plts. and illusts., plus five folding maps, including two large partly coloured maps, contemp. tree calf gilt, gilt dec. spines with gilt-titled leather labels, a little minor wear to extrems. but generally in bright condition, 8vo, together with an autograph letter signed from Stanley, 30 Sackville Street, 26th May 1885, recommending that he sends the noble testimonial and photo which 'silently gives evidence of much that is hoped for' to Colonel Stranch (?) in Brussels, a little spotting, one page, 8vo, pasted on an album leaf with autographs of Adolf Erik Nordenskold (1832-1901) and H. H. Kitchener (1850-1916) pasted to ablum leaf verso, plus a wood engraved portrait of Stanley, a small map and two modern reproductions of related items (7)
