Notes

Exhibited: National Treasures, City Jewels, Hamilton Place, Hamilton, 2003, no. 348. Note: According to Regina Haggo, in a biography of the artist, "Stephen J. Arthurs' trademark is the aerial view, often from a great height, so that natural and architectural setting and the human figures look very small... Whether he is depicting modern urban life or historical battle scenes, the exquisite details of his richly coloured acrylics reveal a love of pattern and an intimate understanding of the subject… Cyclists are among Arthurs' favourite subjects, whether they are racers participating in the Tour de France or casual cyclists holding up traffic. His cyclists resemble soldiers mounted on horses and, like soldiers, they are painted travelling in groups. The military analogy is appropriate, since battles have long been an important source of inspiration for Arthurs." The artist has exhibited internationally and his works of art hang in private, public and corporate collections globally, including the Toronto-Dominion Bank in Toronto, the Robert McLaughlin Art Gallery in Oshawa, the Agnes Etherington Art Gallery at Queen's University in Kingston, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax and the State, War and Historical Reserve Museum of Borodino in Moscow. Commissioned as the official artist of the Hamilton 2003 Road Cycling Championships, this work was executed for and reproduced on the poster for the event. A copy of the poster is available to the purchaser of this lot.
