Item Overview

Description

Ca. 1922/23. Oil on canvas. 36 x 46cm. Signed lower left: H. Thuar. Craftman's frame.
The authenticity of the work was kindly confirmed by Dr. Ute Eggeling, as well as the daughters of the artist, Gisela Macke-Thuar and Anneliese Therkatz-Thuar.

The still life as genre is quite rare in Thuars work and only a few such works
were painted in the first half of the 20th c. The work at hand should be seen in the context of the still lives with geisha, C.R. nos. 92 and 133, dated 1922 and 1923.
Incorporating japanese artworks in paintings was popular since Impressionism. By combining the geisha, the chinese vase and familiar items of the european culture, singular items are more intensely observed.
