Item Overview

Description

DRAWINGS, WATERCOLOURS & GOUACHES - MODERN - SCHALLER, André (Dutch 1920 - 1981). (African Figures). Gouache on brown paper, three sheets of paper glued together, (ca 1960-1969), 234 x 339 cm. Professionally restored by Van Daalen Papierrestauratie in 2009. Fine
The sculptor and painter André Schaller, known from the Monument of Vincent van Gogh in Amsterdam, travelled to Africa many times. The present gouache may be the largest among his works on paper and clearly shows his African influences. Contemporary critics recognized the intensity of his creative language which is considered exotic in the early sixties rather than just pure and transparent. And although one can easily detect the resemblance with the sculptures from the same period, especially with Zonnegodin (1968) [Sun goddess] in Utrecht, there is another influence we can't neglect: Picasso's Guernica! A large reproduction of this work took a prominent place in his studio and might have inspired him to more than the extraordinary dimensions of the work. Indeed, with its composition, figures and colours this unusual masterpiece by Andre Schaller has a class of its own and has communicative capacities that have lost nothing of their captivating power
