Description

Four Family Portraits of the Oldridge Family, 1839. Oil on wood panels, inscribed on verso "Painted Nov 1839 Miss Susan Paine," inscribed on verso of younger son's portrait, "Daniel Henry Oldridge died Oct 1 1840 in his 19th year," replaced grain-painted frames, (some retouch; one with repair), hts. 29 3/4-31, wds. 23-24 1/4 in.

Note: Susan Paine (1792-1862), a portrait and landscape painter, was born in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, and worked in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. From the mid-1840s until her death, she lived in Providence, Rhode Island. Daniel Henry Oldridge was buried in a Rhode Island cemetery in 1840. The previous owners of the paintings were John Scholfield of Norwich, Massachusetts, and Mary Allis of Southport, Connecticut.
