Par sa structure, sa forme et son encadrement, ce panneau appartenait à l''origine au registre
supérieur d''un grand retable ce que confime la présence dans l''épaisseur horizontale du
panneau de deux trous de chevilles qui permettaient l''assujettissement au panneau qu''il
surmontait. On y reconnaît saint Etienne premier martyr de la chrétienté identifi par les
pierres de sa lapidation et sa dalmatique de diacre.
Ce panneau inédit jusqu''ici, fait partie de la production picturale de Taddeo di Bartolo,
artiste qui domine la scène artistique à Sienne dans la seconde moitié du XIVème siècle et
qui fut également appelé à travailler pour les commanditaires de Gênes, Pise et Pérouse. Dans
l''évolution du style de cet artiste, qui commence par le retable de Collegarli, bourgade près
de Pise, en 1389 (vente anonyme, Londres, 3-4 décembre 1997 (Sotheby''s), n°56) on pourra
replacer ce Saint Etienne dans la période pisane du peintre, autour des années 1395 époque
à laquelle l''artiste déploie une intense activité dans cette commune : citons le retable de la
chapelle Sardi Campigli pour la sacristie de l''église San Francesco en 1395 (voir lot suivant) et,
de la même année, celui destiné à l''église San Paolo all''Orto, signé mais dont la date 1390 est
incomplète (Grenoble, Musée des Beaux Arts).
Il semble possible de retrouver dans un panneau représentant Saint Laurent (vente anonyme,
New York, 5 Juin 2008 (Sotheby''s), lot 24) le compagnon de notre saint Etienne. Laurent tout
comme Etienne fut diacre et martyr et dans l''iconographie chrétienne, il est associé à ce dernier
bien que deux cents ans les séparent. Alors qu''une partie de son cadre d''origine a disparu, le
panneau de Saint Laurent offe, tout comme celui de Saint Etienne, la même forme gâblée, des
mesures identiques et une structure similaire avec l''arcade trilobée encadrant le saint ainsi que
les colonnettes torsadées engagées. Le dessin de la dalmatique du saint et son ornementation
poinçonnée identique dans les deux œuvres permettent sans doute de les associer comme
provenant d''un même ensemble.

The bordereau (bidding slip), indicating proof of payment, must be presented when property is collected. Storage costs are due at the current rate.

SMALL ITEMS purchased at auction and not collected after the sale will be transported to the PIASA offices and kept free of charge for a fortnight.
Thereafter the purchaser will be charged storage costs at the rate of € 3 + tax, per day and per lot.

INSURANCE
At the fall of the hammer the title of property shall be transferred to the purchaser, who assumes immediate responsibility for insurance. Uncollected property will be stored at the buyer's risk and expense.
