Notes

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Edward Steichen, then Curator of Photographs at the Museum of Modern Art, encouraged young photographers to show him their work. Often, if Steichen liked what he saw, he would reach into his pocket and offer five dollars cash for each print. Croner was one of those lucky photographers who was also invited shortly to exhibit at MoMA. The present lot is a print that was evidently supplied by Croner to MoMA for the promotion of his inclusion in the exhibition 'Four Photographers' in December 1948 and January 1949. Vintage prints by Croner rarely appear at auction.
