Taisho Period, dated 1912
Kakejiku, in ink and light colour on paper, depicting in the foreground windswept Autumnal shrubs including susuki and kikyo, the full moon in the background, signed Kogyo with seal Kogyo; with tomobako titled, dated, inscribed and sealed by the artist, Mizunoe Ne shoto, Kogyo jidai (inscribed by Kogyo in the early Winter of the year of the Rat [1912]). 137cm x 61cm (54in x 24in). Born in Akita Prefecture Terasaki Kogyo first began studying Kano-school painting in Akita and after moving to Tokyo, studied under Hirafuku Suian. He introduced a new perspective to Nanga painting and greatly contributed to the Foundation of the Nihon Bijutsuin or Japan Art Institute together with Okakura Tenshin.
