Item Overview

Description

TERSTEEGEN, Gerhard (1697-1769). Autograph manuscript, [c.1757], a poem, 'Jesus, das Leben in uns Melod. Seelen Bräutigam oder Psalm 40. Lobw[asser]', 30 lines on 1½ pages, 8vo , authentication by Tersteegen's biographer Gerhard Kerlen, noting that the manuscript was found in an edition of 1757 where the poem was also printed, and that the exemplar was intended for Gertrude Klockhaus (some staining to right margin). A hymn on the search for union with Christ: 'Jesu, nimm mich dir, Gib dich selber mir, Nicht nur Blicke, nein, im Wesen, Mir zum gründlichen genesen: Gib dich, weil ich dann Heilig leben kann'. The poem is printed as no.104 in Tersteegen's Drittes Büchlein . Initially the apprentice to a merchant, Tersteegen's pietistic inclinations led him to withdraw from all secular pursuits in 1728 and devote himself entirely to religious work.
