Notes

Concord was a very popular ship's name in the early nineteenth century and numerous brigs of this name are listed in Lloyd's Register of 1815-16. Only one brig was actually built that year however and, on the assumption that most ship portraits were commissioned to mark a vessel's completion and/or maiden voyage, it seems probable that this work depicts the 215-ton brig Concord built at Scarborough in 1815. Owned by her master Captain J. Hicks, she began life trading to Hamburg out of London.
