Notes

Michiel Coignet was elected a master in the Antwerp guild of St. Luke in c.1640/41, and specialised in painting religious scenes, such as the present work. J. de Maere and M. Wabbes note that 'in this painting the figural treatment recalls that of Frans Francken II.' ( op. cit. ).
