Lot 61: The Journal des dames et des modes, with extraordinary color plates

Journal des Dames et Des Modes. Paris: Bureaux de Journal des Dames, 1912-1914. First edition, copy 924 of 1250 sets on papier de Hollande. Four volumes, three-quarters brown morocco gilt, cloth sides; each volume with the front and back of the original wrappers bound in. 8 1/2 x 5 3/8 inches (21.75 x 13.5 cm); volume I: text, the supplementary plate of the cover of the 1812 journal, plates I-43; volume II: text, supplementary plate, Le Choix Difficile, plates 44-93; volume III: text, plates 94-129; volume IV: text, supplementary plate, La Folie du Jour, plates 130-184 (i.e.186 etched pochoir-colored plates after Bakst, Barbier, Brunelleschi, Legrain. Lhuer, Martin, Wegener and others, and one black-and-white facsimile). The bindings are neatly rebacked with some residual wear, the text is slightly toned but generally this is a clean set internally. One plate has a small marginal tear, one is starting to separate from the binding, and two plates in the fourth volume have minor foxing, but in general they are in excellent shape.

All published of this, the greatest of pre-War French fashion periodicals, with jewel-like plates of great charm and verve, anticipating the coming impact of Art Deco on fashion. Publication ceased with the outbreak of hostilities in World War I; the last issue is dated August 1 1914. Colas 1567; Hiler 486; Carteret IV, 217.
