Item Overview

Description

The New York Sunday Journal.Subtle, dignified journalism wasnit precisely the angle that played the utmost importance to the publishers of the New York newspaper claiming to be "The Best On Earth." But when you're out to sell the most papers in a competitive market, you do what it takes. And who wants subtlety in journalism really. Especially when you have an artist like Mayer providing fantastic graphics to catapult your product into the eye of the public, such as this buxom canoer-who has yet to break a sweat or display the first signs of fear despite the tempestuous surf-with Poseidon himself at the rudder. The few Journal features mentioned in the side panel are hilarious, with a personal favorite being the dry goods merchant who rose from the dead just in time to stop his own funeral. Talk about a close call! And with all this entertainment being offered for a scant three cents, the "Don't You Want To Read" copy is superfluous, seeing as there could be no other response than, "Dagnabit! I want to read it all!!" An illustrator, caricaturist and poster designer, Mayer contributed to many of the dayis best children's books, magazines and newspapers. His feature "Impressions of the Passing Show" graced the pages of The New York Times daily from 1904 to 1911.
