CATALOGUE NOTE

Samuel Pepys Cockerell was born in 1844 and was the son of Charles Robert Cockerell, the architect. He painted historical scenes, portraits, mythological and genre pictures which he exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1875-1903. He was also a decorative artist and sculptor. The later drawings in these albums show a similarity in their highly detailed and naturalistic style to the works of John Ruskin and it seems likely that Cockerell was influenced by the older artist.

George Ulick Browne, 6th Marquess Sligo and 4th Earl of Clanricarde, was born on 1st September 1856. He was Lord Lieutenant and Custos Rotulorum of Co.Mayo, Ireland. He was a Captain in the 12th Bengal Cavalry and fought during the Afghan War of 1879-1880. On 12th October 1887 he married Agatha Stewart, daughter of James Stewart Hodgson, of Lythe Hill, Haslemere. He died on 26th February 1935
