CATALOGUE NOTE

This hitherto unrecorded picture dates from Claesz.'s early maturity. Similar still lifes of upright format, with a large Roemer set to one side, as well as those with a partly-peeled lemon on a silver plate on the rim of which rests a knife, are characteristic of Pieter Claesz.'s work from the end of the 1620s and the early to mid-1630s, although Dr. Martina Brunner-Bulst, to whom we are grateful, dates it more precisely to circa 1634-6, on the basis of a transparency.
