CATALOGUE NOTE

Everett Fahy was the first to associate Arcangelo di Jacopo del Sellaio with the artist formerly known as "The Master of the Miller Tondo"; an identification more recently reaffirmed in an article by Nicoletta Pons (see N. Pons, "Arcangelo di Jacopo del Sellaio", in Arte Cristiana, vol. 84, no. 776, September - October 1996, pp. 374-88). Not much is known about Arcangelo, other than the fact that he was the son of the painter Jacopo del Sellaio and that he took over the running of his father's workshop upon the latter's death in 1493. Arcangelo's style comes very close to that of his father's, so much so that after Jacopo's death Arcangelo even finished off some of his commissions (for example, the Pietà in the chapel of the Compagnia di San Frediano, in the church of San Frediano, Florence, begun by Jacopo in 1483, was left unfinished at his death and completed by Arcangelo in 1506).

The attribution of this tondo to Arcangelo di Jacopo del Sellaio was proposed by Everett Fahy on the basis of photographs.
