CATALOGUE NOTE

The sitter was the daughter of Martin Bowes of Bury St. Edmunds and his wife Elizabeth Thurland. Her sister Anne married Philip Broke (see previous lot) and she was also included in Bardwell's portrait of the Broke and Bowes families painted in 1740.
