Item Overview

Description

Thomas Crofton Croker (1798-1854), Irish antiquary LETTER TO WILLIAM JERDAN, 1834, PLUS FIVE LETTERS FROM JERDAN TO CROKER, autograph manuscript letter, single sheet, signed "T. Crofton Croker", 23 by 18cm., 9 by 7.25in. Thomas Crofton Croker (1798 - 1854), born in Cork, was a pioneering collector of Irish folklore. Working at the Admiralty in London, he rapidly made a name for himself as an author in works on the fairy legends, songs, topography and archaeology of Ireland. William Jerden (1782 - 1869), Scottish born journalist, was a major figure of his time. He was responsible for seizing Percival's assassin in the lobby of the House of Commons. He helped found the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Geographical Society. Jerden's autograph letters (no years) are clearly from one close friend to another.
