Description

Thomas Hicks (1823-1890) American. " Portrait of Roger Sherman (1721-1793)", Oil on Canvas, Monogrammed and dated 1854, 30" x 25".
Born in Newtown, Pennsylvania he was the cousin and pupil of Edward Hicks. He entered the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1837, then at the National Academy of Design, New York. He was elected ANA in 1841. From 1845 he travelled in Europe and visited London, Florence and Rome. Hicks spent a short time in the Paris Studio of Couture then returned to New York in 1849. He was elected NA in 1851. Hicks painted his first oil portrait of Lincoln in 1860. He died at Trenton Falls, New York. His work is represented in the New York Historical Society; North Carolina Museum, Museum of the City of New York.
Roger Sherman, portrait in this work, was born on 19th April 1721. He was an American Lawyer and Politician. He served as the first Mayor of New Haven, Connecticut, and served on the committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence and was also a representative and Senator in the new republic. He was the only person to sign all four great state papers of the U.S.; The Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution.
