A SAMMELBAND OF FOUR VERY RARE DUTCH-PUBLISHED WORKS ON PHYSIOLOGY, particularly the anatomy and function of glands, comprising: the FIRST EDITION OF GRAAF'S EARLY INVESTIGATION OF THE PANCREAS; first editions of Stensen and Highmore; the rare second edition of WHARTON'S FUNDAMENTAL STUDY OF GLAND FUNCTION. First published in London in 1656, and reprinted 3 years later, Wharton's Adenographia remained the key text on the subject into the first half of the eighteenth century. Stensen, in his Observationes anatomicae, reports on his important discoveries concerning the glandular lymphatic system. 'Going against received opinion... Stensen stated that the true purpose of the glands was to secrete fluid' (Norman). Here he described the lachrymal system in particular detail and was first to elucidate its function in facilitating the movement and cleansing of the eyelids. Nathaniel Highmore was a friend of William Harvey, and was one of the founders of the Royal Society in the year his Exercitationes duae was published; NO COPY IS RECORDED BY ABPC SINCE 1975.
