Thurloe Conolly, (b.1918) RATHFARNHAM BY-ROAD, 1944 signed, inscribed and dated on reverse oil on canvas 43 by 58cm., 17 by 23in. Provenance: Exhibited: 'Paintings by Thurloe Conolly', The Dublin Painters Gallery, February 1945, catalogue no. 15 (14 gns) Literature Notes:Thurloe Conolly was born in Cork and worked in an office from leaving school until 1941, spending his spare time painting and writing poetry. Once he began painting full time his work was exhibited widely: in 1943 at the IELA, at the 1944 Exhibition of Subjective Art in Dublin, and in 1945 at the first show in the Dublin Painters Gallery. He had a one man show at Victor Waddington's Gallery in 1949, and a series of exhibitions in America including Boston and New York, as well as in England, Holland and Sweden. A major retrospective was held in 1993 and another last year at the Hillsboro Fine Art Gallery, Dublin. The present work relates to Halls Barn, Rathfarnham, formerly owned by the composer and fellow White Stag Group exhibitor, Brian Boydell (1917-2000), and illustrated in S. B. Kennedy's Irish Art and Modernism.
