Notes

From the Red Lama series (1997-2000), made in Holland! Feng Bin worked regularly in the Netherlands, from 1991 onwards. He was a teacher at the Amsterdam School of the Arts (Rietveld) and also lectured in America, Canada and Korea. His combination of guóhuà (classical Chinese painting), landscape and abstract painting is typical for the works he produced around the turn of the century. The huge vague silhouette in the front is a red-robed lama, the Tibetan monks that appear in all of his paintings of the period. A series of these works was made in Finsterwolde (Friesland) where he stayed as a temporary recluse from the noisy crowds in his hometown Chonqing. Tibet and Buddhism play an important role in these works. In his own words: "I started from the simple idea that I did not want to follow the realistic orthodoxy, or to sell local novelties, or to show cheap humanistic concerns over the people there. I wanted to search for the Other world through my innermost feelings. [...] eternity is always desired. [...] The powerful, intricate and dignified Tibetan temples, the incomparable and omniscient Tibetan Buddhism and the drifting red-robed lama became my reason to paint, and I think they contain the humanistic meaning of the world today." Back in China he left "the doors to eternity" from this series and changed to a more figurative kind of painting with dance as the main subject. Subsequently the modern classics from his 'Tibetan/Dutch' period of only three-years are few and only very seldomly offered. Works in the collection of the British Museum, The National Art Museum of China and many other collections.
