Item Overview

Description

A lady and a gentleman in an interior oil on canvas 221/2 x 191/2 in. (57 x 49.5 cm.) PROVENANCE William Gablett, Dublin. with Brian Koetser, Spring 1969. Matthew Green; Sotheby's, London, 11 December 1974, lot 95 (sold œ3,200). NOTES The artist completed his training under the Amsterdam portrait painter Jan Maurits Quinkhard, whose influence is clear in his early works. In a few years, however, the young painter developed a more personal manner, one in which the element of genre played an important part, as in the portrait of the engraver Jan Caspar Philips (1747; Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum); during this period Regters was apparently influenced by Frans van der Mijn, who worked in Amsterdam until his departure for England in 1748 or 1749, an influence that is detectable in the present work. Best known for his small-scale portraits and conversation pieces, a few other genre works by the artist are known, for example the Market Scene in the Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Aachen.
