Notes

Tiong Ang uses different media specific to his topics - whether painting, video installation, photography or social projects - and aims to carefully portray people's negotiations and behaviour within an ethically and socially hybridized environment. He employs a mixture of found footage and existing objects with manipulated, edited imagery to evoke an alternative state of mind, one that seems to be disoriented and even cut off from society, yet also fluid, poetic and accellerating into alternative zones of knowledge. Reality and fiction, distance and engagement, historical memory and utopian projection intertwine in his methods.
Recently he has worked on more elaborate research based projects in which a multitude of media investigates the layerdness of perspectives of a given subject matter. The installation My Name is Pencil (2009), produced for the exhibition 'Beyond the Dutch' at Centraal Museum Utrecht about the (post)colonial relationships between The Netherlands and Indonesia, belongs to this category.

Tiong Ang was resident artist at the Rijksakademie in 1988-1990.
He won the Koninklijke Subsidie voor Vrije Schilderkunst (NL) in 1991 and an Honourable mention at the 2001 Venice Biennale (IT).
