Notes

Angelini was one of many Italian sculptors who moved to Paris, exhibiting there regularly and winning a mention honorable for his bust of the Duchesse d'Aumale. Upon his return to Italy he was made professor of sculpture at the Naples Academy, from where he was commissioned to sculpt the marble bust of Ferdinando II for the elegant octagonal room known as the Sala Ottagona in the Vesuvius Observatory. He is mainly remembered as a sculptor of portrait busts intricately observed from life, as can be seen from the remarkable detail of the jewellery and hair bun on the present work.
