Notes

Tjebbe Beekman is best known for paintings of 'the city'. He works according to a strict procedure: using photos he constructs a collage, which serves as model for a painting. Next, he lays the canvas on the floor, and applies layers of lacquer, lumps of paint, sand, bits of rope, steel wire and other waste materials. Looking at the composition, Beekman now completes it, applying fresh paint and working up certain areas to bring the final image
to life. His paintings are more or less devoid of people – and when they do appear, they are mere contours behind illuminated monitors. Beekman's paintings describe contemporary life in the modern metropolis: ever-faster technology, dramatic social contrasts and a never-ending avalanche of 'restrictions' designed to inspire a sense of social safety.

Tjebbe Beekman was resident artist at the Rijksakademie in 2003-2004.
He won the Buning Brongers Prize (NL) in 2004.
